Nature’s Antioxidants: Goji and Inca berries

Nature's Antioxidants

Sometimes it just feels overwhelming to keep up with it all. One minute it’s all about the ‘work hard, play hard’ attitude while the next focus is on squat proof leggings and yoga retreats. Trying to balance it all is impossible! Plus you have other things to worry about; love, work, life, kids etc. So can you have it all? Well iRaw thinks so but you need to listen up. As a brand, we’re passionate about making products from only fresh, natural and minimally processed ingredients provided to us by nature. We package these same beneficial ingredients into delicious products that help fight disease and promote good health.

Connecting the dots yet? Demands of modern day are pushing us away to poor quality food and skipping meals. We’re on a mission to make smart snacks to stop this! This article is all about this exact idea: how to snack smarter with nature’s antioxidants. Read on to learn more.

What are Nature’s Antioxidants?

We wrote a blog post focused on antioxidants earlier last year where we defined antioxidants as ‘chemicals that naturally occur in plant based foods’. In fact, you might know of some already; beta-carotene, flavanols, resveratrol, lycopene, vitamin A, C, E. We discussed this in more detail in that same post, but the general idea is that antioxidants help fight inflammation, reduce risk of disease and boost the body’s immune system and overall health.

ORAC scale

There are thousands of different antioxidants found in food. The antioxidant capacity of these foods is measured using an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale. The higher the food on the scale, the more antioxidant rich. ORAC is important because measuring antioxidant benefits helps us to eat foods that help us to live longer.

Let’s take a look at two examples: goji and inca berries.

Goji Berries

Goji berries, sometimes called Wolf Berries,  have been around for thousands of years, traditionally used in Chinese medicine. They are low in calories but rich in phytonutrients as well as over 20 different vitamins and minerals that help support health and vitality. Benefits of eating these red gems include better digestion, balanced blood sugar, improved musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health to name only a few! Finally, it’s notable that goji berries are also a great source of amino acids providing 11 essential amino acids (source) which is quite unusual for a fruit.

According to the ORAC scale, goji berries score an impressive 4,310. For comparison an apple is around the 2000 mark.

iRaw’s Spicy Chocolate Rawl Ups are a great source of goji berries. With a lower date content than most energy bars on the market, these are a ‘healthier’ snack with the added benefits from antioxidant rich cacao nibs. The cayenne pepper adds a little kick to the rich chocolate flavour which makes them unique!

Inca Berries

Inca berries or Goldenberries as they’re often referred to are indeed a superfood. We wrote a separate blog post dedicated to this berry which you can check out here. They have a unique sour taste with a hint of sweet and come loaded with health benefits. Inca berries are rich in fibre (twice the amount of dates, prunes and apricots!) and contain vitamins A, C, E, K1, B1, B2, and B3. They are also a great source of fatty acids and phytosterols. They also have trace amounts of calcium and iron, plus other minerals.

On the ORAC scale, inca berries score an impressive 3874.

iRaw and Nature’s Antioxidants

Want to enjoy dessert and know that the delicious treat is also nourishing your body? What if you could get on with work and not have to worry about finding a ‘healthy’ spot to grab lunch? What if you could get an extra boost from one small snack? iRaw is revolutionising snacking with smart food. Being smart is about maximising nutrient intake from your daily diet. When you’re on the go and trying to keep up with the trends, you need smart food at your fingertips.

Each of the 17 iRaw products does exactly this. An organic natural treat that is rich in vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre all packed into one delicious snack that you can enjoy on the go.

When you get the right food the rest follows; Increased energy, cleansed body, mental health boost, better sleep, healthy weight and finally all this helps to slow down the speed of ageing. When we consume ORAC rich food, we help to maintain the length of our Telomeres which are at each end of the chromosome. Their job, amongst other things, is to protect the chromosomes from deterioration which if that happens increases our internal age and eventually reduces the quality of our lives.

iRaw Want’s to Help You

One of the driving force behind iRaw products is to deliver top quality healthy snacks on the go. When people get busy with everyday life, eating on the go increases. We need to get by from one minute to the other and tend to look to quick solutions to feed our immediate cravings. Unfortunately, a big portion of the snacks on the market are high in carbs and fruit-based meaning also highly processed. These products are not able to protect our health in the same way as minimally processed natural ingredients.
