It’s here! It’s finally here! Christmas is days away. With all the fuss, sadly health & fitness often takes a back seat, replaced by wine, cocktails and festive mince pies. Some of us are great to keep the balance, others get back into the swing of things very quickly post holiday season. But a lot also struggle to get back on track. Health, wellness and being active shouldn’t be a chore or something to dread. Nor does January have to entail famine, endless cardio and misery. As a final wrap up of 2017, we wanted to share some simple iRaw healthy habits you can kick start/prioritise over the holiday season while knowing that you’re doing your body good. And guess what, there’s not much sacrifice involved!
The Power of Healthy Habits
Think about things you do out of habit. Brushing your teeth, putting your keys by the door, taking your shoes off on entering the house etc. They’re all habits and they all require almost zero thought. That’s the power of it! Motivation is limited, but habits can just keep going and going to lead you to your goals. It happens every year – January comes and we all set off on our health kick. And sadly 80% of us quit by February. Why? Because the motivation is gone to keep all the dramatic changes going and there’s no habits to replace any of it. It’s not about making dramatic changes or being perfect, it’s about making healthy a lifestyle.
They say it takes 21 days to create a habit but a recent study has actually suggested it’s longer, 66 days to be exact. First of all, the key is to start slow, make simple steps that fit your current day-to-day and build all the time! You’ll find our top healthy habits below!
- Drink Water, Drop the Soda.
Our body is made up of 60-70% water so it’s a no brainer to drink the stuff! So many of us don’t drink enough or replace it with sugary soda. Especially during the holiday season where alcohol is at every table, it’s important to stay hydrated! It’s important to aim for at least 2-3 litres per day so start each day with a large glass of water and aim to carry a bottle with you. You can even set timers on your phone to remind you if you need a nudge.
- Eat one really healthy meal per day
With all the sweets, canapés and desserts, that healthy diet starts to get diluted. Don’t lose it completely but instead aim to get one really healthy meal per day to get some nutrient dense foods into your body. Look to get a large plate of fibre and vitamin rich leafy greens, peppers, carrots, tomatoes, beetroot, sweet potatoes, nuts, seeds…the list goes on! So pile the plate high and get stuck in! Your body will thank you.
- Boost Every Meal Just a Little
It’s super simple but you can actually boost each meal you eat and get plenty of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals! Here’s just a few suggestions:
- Top salads or cooked vegetables with pomegranate, seeds and nuts. Pomegranate is full of antioxidants, anti-viral, and anti-tumor properties and are a good source of vitamins, especially vitamin A, C, and E, as well as folic acid. And nuts are a great source of healthy fats to help absorb the fat soluble vitamins!
- Include a side salad
- Adding fresh herbs and spices to absolutely everything! These guys are so packed full of nutrition!
The festive season usually means some much need time off to rest too which is a great chance to recharge the batteries. We all live incredibly busy lives and stress is just part of day-to-day now. One really simple way to find a little me time is breathing. Bet you’re raising an eyebrown right now…..yes you breathe all day every day but we’re talking deep belly breathes into your diaphragm. That kind of deep breathing that really channel oxygen in and expel toxins out. You can find some tips here. Your goal is 5 minutes per day. Just set a timer and do it!
But do wrap up warm because baby it’s cold outside! You might not be able to make it to the gym, but getting outside to move it all you need! Movement and exercise are not the same thing. You only exercise for about an hour a day (if even) but you have the rest of the day to move! Movement helps to keep the muscles and joints moving, get your blood flow circulating and help keep you fit! Your goal is 10-20 minutes per day. Build from there!
- Mini Cleanse
To help support your body over the Christmas season, a great morning ritual to get in the habit of is enjoying a cup of warm water with lemon on waking. You can kick this up a notch adding fresh ginger and apple cider vinegar if you like! It’s a great way to support your liver in the detoxification process.
If you’re looking for something a little deeper cleansing, iRaw recommends Yuuga’s anti ageing detox! The programme is designed to help to detect the factors that are making you age faster than desired. You can sign up for the full 8 weeks OR any one of the three phases individually. Not only will you detox naturally, but you will also discover environmental factors and chemicals and skin care products that are accelerating the ageing process. More on the Anti-Ageing Detox
